Our history

Bloomsbury Square is one of London's oldest garden squares and has a long history; it was built in the reign of Charles II by the Earl of Southampton in 1661. Many of the rooms at the Georgian building of 12 Bloomsbury Square are named after famous 20th century writers, intellectuals and artists, known as the 'Bloomsbury Group', who lived and worked in the area in the early 20th century. 12 Bloomsbury Squares’ rooms include homages to novelists Virginia Woolf and E. M. Forster, economist John Maynard Keynes, and critic Lytton Strachey. Art historian Nikolaus Pevsner housed his library at
12 Bloomsbury Square in our panelled meeting room.
